Workshopon Libraries
On 24August,2012, aworkshopon Libraries in thepresent world was orgsanised at the India International Centre. Our Vice Chairperson, Dr.Mrs. Goradia, Principal, Mrs. Narula and teachers, Ms.UpasanaKapoor (Librarian), Ms.Geetanjali Varma, Ms.Sunita Singh, andMs.GandharviMukherjee attended the workshop with 4 students. Eminentspeakers were present to share their experiences and newideas forActive Libraries.
Ms. Rukmani Banerjee from Pratham Books, the host organistaion, spoke at the startemphasized about:
1.Reducing the distance between books in the cupboards and students;
2.Examining the area of childrens publications;
3.Capturing the spirit of childrens books;
4. The importance of libraries as a need of the hour and
5. The mapping of young minds.
She was followed by Ms. Jaishee Acharya representing an NGO called Room To Read. She shared some of her experiences and thoughts on how to inculcate the habit of reading among children. According to her children do not come born book-lovers but they come born learners! She said reading must not be confined to the library but must happen in the classroom as well as home.
Next Ms.Amita Mishra, Principal DPS International School, spoke..She named Librarians as theGame Changers and in the highest sense, the teacher. She had carried visuals on present day libraries whose ethos is Todays library is a library with no walls.
The concluding speakerwas Ms. AbhaAdams Director, Step by Step School, who insisted on the view of integratinglibraries into thecurriculum. Shesharedinteresting ideas to inculcate the readinghabitamong children, namely, Buddy Reading, (shared Reading), Round RobinReading (read-aloud story slowly andsentencewiseby the children invidually, by turn). Also the option of handing the children stories without titles and asking them to design book covers.
