CBSE Capacity Building Workshop for teachers-Use of ICT in Psychology

Teachers are lifelong learners and in order to help them continually upgrade their skills, CBSEs training wing organises diverse capacity building programmes for them on online portals. Two such programmes, Teaching strategies and methodologies in Psychology and Use of ICT in Psychology were scheduled for 19 June, 2020. School counsellor, Ms Jigyasa Khokhar represented our School at these workshops. Teachers of other schools like DPS (Daman), Fylfot Public School (Dehradun), Sri Ram Centennial School (Indore) also attended the sessions.

The resource person for the first session was Ms Sukhmeen Cheema, Principal, The Foundation School. She made the session interactive by initiating a discussion on the recent suicide by a famous Bollywood actor. Using the subject as her base model she asked the participants to name related concepts which can be introduced to the students of Psychology and also incorporated in a lesson plan. The participants listed empathy, social quotient and adversity quotient as some of the concepts. Ms Cheema then spoke about various useful teaching strategies. A few of these were peer reciprocal teaching, jigsaw technique, case study method etcetera.

The second session, Use of ICT in Psychology was facilitated by Ms Gurjeet Kaur, PGT Psychology and Counsellor, DAV Public School, Vasant Kunj. She discussed the use and importance of ICT. As digital learning is the need of the hour, she mentioned a few digital platforms which can be used by teachers to make their classrooms interesting and cater to the diverse needs of learners. A few of these were lecture slides, Kahoot, Xmind, Nearpod and Vox Vote. Towards the end of the session, the speaker recommended websites like RCI, NAOP, NIMH, Psy Today for a better understanding of Psychology.

Both the sessions were very informative and enriching. They laid emphasis upon the distinct methods of teaching Psychology and provided ways to help teachers break the monotony of the class. The sessions explored various strategies and activities like interactive lectures, demonstration method and deductive/inductive approaches to teaching. The sessions proved to be very useful and productive as the teacher-participants gained valuable insights. They were able to gauge the vivid aspects of demonstrative teaching and learn innovative ways of engaging with pupils.
