Excursion to Gandhi Smriti, class 1
A visit to Gandhi Smriti was organized for students of class 1 on 20 December, 2013. A bright winter's morning greeted us as 163 students and 7 teachers set out to visit the museum. The children had been told the story of Gandhiji and what he taught in the classroom so that they could absorb the exhibits that they were to see better.
We were welcomed by an expanse of manicured garden and an enormous model of the charkha at the entrance. We explained to the children how this was the place where Bapu was assassinated on 30 January, 1948 by Nathuram Godse. The little faces listened carefully and, as if in an awe of the place, spoke in hushed voices.
We strolled the richly mounted corridors of the museum where a continuous pictorial display of the freedom struggle and our freedom fighters hung. Several of the chikren identified the different freedom fighters in the pictures and quietly listened as we explained the trail of events leading to independence.
A part of the museum housed tableaux offering an in-depth visual about the course of independence and the sacrifices made by nationalist leaders. The depiction of the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh was gripping.
We were escorted by young khaki- clad volunteers who acted as our guides and were a useful source of information. We also had a chance to see a demonstration of the spinning of khadi on the premise. Finally a short film on Bapu in the museum theatre.
Indeed a fun-filled educational excursion for the students as well as teachers.
