Inter-House English Reading Competition

INTER-HOUSE ENGLISH READING COMPETITION School organised an inter-house English reading competition for the students of class 5 on 21 April 2012. The importance of reading cannot be underestimated, as reading stretches the childs mind and introduces him/her to the a world of wonder that is literature. In this contest students were asked to find tales from Latin America ( School theme for the year) and read them out to the audience. Choosing and preparing a short story from South America to read, motivated the children to actively explore literature from this part of the world. Furthermore, the competition encouraged students to practice pronunciation and listen to others. The Rabbit and the Coyote, The Disobedient Son, The Clever Priest, The Fisherman and the Bear, How the Monkey got Its Tail were a few stories read out by them. The children realised that the stories offered many facets. That of suspense, entertainment and information and they were filled with a new curiosity. They read out their stories with clear articulation, correct accentuation and voice modulation. They did not confuse reading with acting. The judges, Principal maam and Ms. Sonia Majumdar were very taken up by the standard achieved and expressed their appreciation and encouragement. The children in the audience were equally delighted and several volunteered to tell one more story! The winners were: Sanjana- Varun House -I Sana Mendiratta- Varun House -II Rhea Khanna- Indra House and Kartik Anand- Surya House III. As Reported by Ms. Neelima Sharma, teacher
