Self Discovery Week in Pre primary- April19

Each year, the new academic session at The Indian School begins with Self Discovery Week. This is an innovative way of building students self-esteem and getting them to know each other and themselves. Self-reflection helps students think about their appearance, personality, friends, family and their hidden potentials.

As part of discovering oneself and spiral learning, the tiny-tots of the pre-primary department of our School engaged in several activities during the first week of April 2019.

The carefully planned exercises included drawing a self-portrait on paper. The children were also taught rhymes on discovering oneself, both physical and emotional qualities. This was a reinforcement of skills of observation, analytical reasoning, counting, recognition and visual association.

The little munchkins were fascinated when asked to observe their facial features in a mirror. They noticed the colour of their eyes, the shape of their noses, their ears, how they looked when they smiled and frowned, etc. The children giggled in glee as they saw their cherubic mirror images smiling back at them! This exercise was the highlight of the week!

Next, flash cards with visuals depicting the emotions were shown to the children. They were asked to identify which of these matched their own expression or mood! The children observed the cards and carefully chose the ones that resembled them the most. This engaging activity helped the little artists draw their faces.

Other interesting activities included, the name activity- My Name is Special and decorating their Name Crowns. The eager learners traced their names on paper and then created a crown for the same with finger painting. It was an opportunity for the children to know that their names are special. The activity motivated them to practice recognising and tracing their names. This familiarisation task helped promote healthy self-esteem and independence.

The children also showcased their creativity by making photo frames and decorating them.

The journey of self-discovery was a fun filled experience for the nascent learners who are on the threshold of formal schooling.
