A historic tale retold, the plot revolves around Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar languishing in exile in far away Rangoon, which he describes as: Kitnaahai badnaseeb zafar dafan ke liye do gaz zamiin bhii naa milii kue-yaar mein." The play unfolds as an interface between modern day college history student Rudra who is very attracted to the story of the life of the last Mughal Emperor. Rudra has a supernatural experience and meetsBahadur Shah Zafar and is able to witness to see the drama, as it were, of the time. As the play proceeds, one cannot, but, be enamoured by the benevolence of the Mughals and yet feel resentful of their ambitions; feel fear of their cruelty as well as awe for their ability to make an amalgamation of the diverse cultures that India comprised. Each of the students who saw the enthralling performance, from classes 10, 11 and 12 was spellbound and left the theatre with a renewed enthusiasmfor history. Besides being fortified with aworld of knowledge about a mighty dynastythat changed the face of our country. An important lesson we took away from the life of Bahadur Shah Zafar was that he was not just the last Mughal ruler, but was also the first leader to be popularly elected.
