Workshop on Behaviour Problems - Causes, Prevention and Remediation

A workshop on behavior problems by Dr . V.S Ravindran was organised for teachers on 20 November, 2012 at The Heritage School. The workshop played an important role in reinforcing the teachers' perception in general. In specific, it clarified how behavior management is about teaching positive behaviour.

The workshop was beneficial in helping understand the role of the teacher in facilitating socially desirable behaviour in children with minimally intrusive, yet effective intervention. Dr. Ravindran pointed out that the compelling present day education system desperately needs larger dialogue between the teacher and a student. This can provide the required and a robust scaffolding against the potential perils of behaviour problems. Needless to say, prevention is any day better than cure. Some of the points highlighted at the workshop were as below.

PERSISTENT BEHAVIOR PROBLEM AND REMEDIATION: 1. The Chatterbox- - What can you do about the student who distracts others with non-stop talking? a. Give a positive direction or reminder, followed by "thanks. b. Try a strategic pause. c. Keep the focus on the primary issue by knowing how to redirect. d. Give students a choice with consequences attached. e. Provide take-up time. This refers to the time students have to respond to corrective discipline. f. Reestablish the relationship.

2. The Debater - This student challenges everything a teacher says or does. With him or her, every small primary issue escalates into several major secondary ones.

a. Distinguish between primary and secondary behavior.

b. Avoid unnecessary power struggles.

c. Plan a follow-up.

3. The Clinger

- This dependent student rarely does anything without demanding the teacher's immediate help and attention. To wean him or her of this dependency: a. Start with tactical ignoring. b. Combine simple directions and reminders with hand signals. c. Give students alternatives. Filed by Ms. Ekta Bidhuri, primary teacher.
