Workshop on Technology and innovation in the Mathematics classroom

A two-day workshop was conducted by the Department of Elementary Education, Lady Shri Ram College for Women on Technology and Innovations in the Mathematics classroom on 9 and 10 October, 2013. Ms. Jayanti Dwivedi (PRT Mathematics) and Ms. Mini Bhadran (TGT Mathematics) attended the workshop. The primary objective of the workshop was to

Familiarize teachers, teacher-educators and pre-serviced teachers with various ways in which technology and hands-on activities can be integrated in the Mathematics classroom.

Illustrate the potential of various technology tools such as dynamic (DGS), graphic calculators and spreadsheets in engaging the learner in the mathematics classroom.

Provide hands-on experience in the use of tools such as, Geogebra (an open source dynamic geometry software), MS EXCEL and graphic calculators.

Lectures by eminent persons with notable contributions to Mathematics education in India, like Professor Parvin Sinclair, (Director NCERT), Dr. Usha Menon, Professor Amitabh Tripathi, Dr. Jonaki B Ghosh, Professor Amber Habib, Professor Geetha Venkatraman and Ms. Rashmi Kathuria.

A hands-on workshop session on graphic calculators by Ms. Jonaki Ghosh and hands-on workshop on Geogebra, an open source dynamic geometry software by Ms.Rashmi Kathuria.

The workshop was an enriching experience for us. We particularly appreciated the exposure to the multifarious ways in which technology can aid the process of mathematical explanation. Also how the potential of graphic calculator and computers can be exploited to make school Mathematics enjoyable and meaningful.
