Activity-based Mathematics Workshop.
Delhi Police Public School, Safdarjang Enclave organised a workhop, Activity based Mathematics on 1st Nov 2014. Resource person, Mr. Ashwani Bakshi discussed the Math syllabus and how it has undergone changes from time to time in accordance with evolution of the subject and the emerging needs of the community.
The proposed curriculum includes the study of the number system, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, statistics, graphs and coordinate geometry etc. He advised that the teaching of Math is best imparted through activities which may involve the use of concrete materials, models, patterns, charts, pictures, posters, games, puzzles and experiments.
He also mentioned the general parameters which are essential for effective teaching patience, trust, eye control, organised lecture, involvement/ self esteem of each student, motivation / involvement, fearless but disciplined environment (class control).
Mr. Bakshi emphasised that teaching is effective only when its objectives are achieved. The relevant/ essential content must be completely covered. The student may not know everything but should become confident enough to attempt any application-based problem on the subject. The student may also not be proficient in the subject but despite this, he/ she must not fear numbers. It is imperative that both, the teacher as well as the students must enjoy the class.
The teacher should discuss the various aspects of the concerned unit with seniors/co-teachers and/ or consult available resources to update the subject knowledge/ pedagogical approach. The teacher and student must make time for the effort.
The teacher and the students should also remain regularly in touch with parents and the School authorities, respectively, with regard to progress in the subject.
The speaker concluded that introspection is very important and after every class the teacher must introspect and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching methodology applied.
