Annual Day 2015
The Indian School celebrated Annual Day on 28th and 29th November 2015, bringing down the curtains on the School Theme of two years States along the Western Coast of India. As a fitting finale and a culmination to our theme, we mounted a gloriously designed journey of tableaux, song, dance, drama, dialogue and design, as we meandered the magnificence of the vast coastline, presenting a spectacle in its entirety through Indian Cinema.
The Schools front lawns lay bespeckled with a splendid display of tableaux. The tableaux were a perfect example of visual and sensory delight. The guests were served a diverse salver of performances starting with the Goa tableau which depicted a fishing scene in which the students performed in costume, as Goan fishermen and fisherwomen as the Junior School choir dished out enchanting Konkani songs. The Karnataka tableau showcased the dynamic growth of the state with the development of the cyber city of Bangalore and the history of the states development through the lives of three of its numerous luminaries -Tipu Sultan, Girish Karnad and Shakuntala Devi. The highlight of the Maharashtra tableau was the issue of farmer suicides.
The legend of the festival of Onam was presented in the Kerala tableau, where two dance performances, the Thiruvadhira and the Kathakali were great attractions.
Guests admired, with great enthusiasm, snap plays, songs and dances, along with alluring props that enthused them throughout the School compound.
Parents walked through the Art Exhibition put up in the Auditorium, marveling at the reproductions and replications of the works of Mario Miranda, M.F. Hussain and S.H. Raza, Raja Ravi Vermas canvas paintings, legendary Bollywood posters, Kutch embroidery patterns, Ajanta Cave paintings, pen and ink architecture, doodle art and a paper mache sculpture of the Trimurti from the Elephanta Caves.
The skating rink was abuzz with activity. The Indian music choir adorned one side of the rink in its elegant blue and gold costume, presenting a melange of euphonious tunes, in sync with the ongoing theme. The evidently bewitched listeners halted to revel in the euphony of the heady melodies, before witnessing the stage performances. They seemed held in sway as they savoured the exhilarating pieces, some sitting, many even standing!
The students in colourful Gujarati ensemble attracted attention on the other side, as they sang a Gujarati bhajan and presented the Dandiya and Garba. The Kite Festival, the White Revolution, the Gir forest and the celebrated sons of the state- Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Narendra Modi were aptly depicted in the Gujarat tableau.
The School ground, the venue of the main event dazzled in all its glory. The stage was all set for a musical extravaganza. Bollywood spoke out loud with movie posters painted by students, mounted as a backdrop to the stage.
The show commenced with our talented Western Music Collectives, performing a medley of songs from the 60s, 70s and the 80s, while paying tribute to the great Greek-American composer and pianist, Yanni. Our young musicians performed an A cappella named Happy, which was preceded by the blowing of Vuvuzela for an auspicious beginning to the programme.
In his address to the gathering, our Chairman Mr. Prafull Goradia emphasised the importance of knowing and connecting to our roots. He urged parents and grandparents to apprise their children and grandchildren about family histories to begin with. He said that it is equally important to know the history of our country. Mr. Goradia suggested it was indeed a novel way to learn about our past through cinema, which is both entrancing and enriching.
Then followed a, one and a half hour-long, captivating presentation of the musical. Students across classes 1-12 assembled a veritable and stunning display of dance and drama in awe-inspiring finery! India ki Kahaani Cinema ki Zubaani-A musical presentation of the classics from Bollywood was passionately put together to showcase 100 years of Bollywood. We thus commemorated the spirit of art and culture, foraying into the resplendent world of Indian films.
The show portrayed Indian cinema as a breezy window of the rapidly evolving outlook of the Indian society. It showcased how our films have been a reflection of the socio-economic, political and cultural changes that have taken place in the society over the years. Some of the iconic scenes from our movies were enacted with great alacrity, punctuated with dances, much to the delight of the already excited audience. The journey of films was shown through the eyes of Dada Sahib Phalke, the father of Indian Cinema.
Over 1600 students worked as one to enthrall the audience in colourful costumes and foot-tapping numbers from Bollywood, against a backdrop of slides and videos to make the presentation whole and complete. The stage came alive with captivating manoeuvres of young talents of the School. The performances brought to life our Theme in a way words fail to express! The magnitude of the event could be seen and felt with the cheering and applause from the impressive panoply of audience.
A truly splendid grand finale brought together all the performers of the evening, dancing on two pumping and pulsating movie soundtracks. The audience sat back overwhelmed.
The proceedings were offered a vote of thanks by our Principal Ms. Tania Joshi, as a resounding ovation feted the performers and their facilitators, the teachers. The evening came to a close with the crowds proceeding to indulge in a fusion of flavours of the states along the Western coast and sample the delectable spread of-mouth watering cuisine, in the food stalls set up on the occasion.
The Annual Day celebrations were indeed a befitting farewell to our Theme of the Year, and how!
Ms. Gandharvi Mukherjee.

We really appreciate the toil and hard work of each person involved in making it so great!
The Annual Day had many beautiful points, right from

The Art work The art work showcased in and around the auditorium was breathtaking. The giant sized sculptures, paintings, and mirror work was impressive.
The cultural program The classical & cultural depiction of dance and music in skating rink was very enjoyable.
The food stalls Very well crafted menu and good quality food was being served.
The decoration Overall very neat and colourful dcor.
The discipline Staff members and students have done a great job in maintaining discipline through out the day and especially at dispersal time and around the stage. We were really happy to see the dispersal being managed so well (without - overcrowding/stampede like situation in corridors).
The Show Inspirational words from Goradia Sir, awesome costumes, beautiful performances, excellent sound and light (special mention to the dialogue delivery and expressions of students). The overall story showed many rare facts about Indian cinema, and was so knowledgeable.
We were extremely proud to see the enthusiasm in children in driving the entire show themselves, right from opening speech till the end, this really shows the level of motivation and trust that the school bestows in them. We were also happy to see the students doing Zorbing, girls venturing into new art forms like drums/casio/skating/etc. and we would definitely like Khanak and Arnav to learn these in the school in coming times.
The greatest happiness was to see Khanak enjoying every bit of it, right from rehearsals to the final show! She is extremely happy about the whole experience.
Once again, please accept and extend our Big congratulations to all!
Thanks and Regards,
Sunaina Gupta (Mother of Khanak Gupta, 4-B)
