Career Counseling with Ms. Usha Albuquerque, classes 9-12.

Once upon a time, almost everyone had to be a good hunter or a farmer, else theyd starve to death. Then came Industrialization and later the Internet, fueling other prospects for making a living and fulfilling ones aspirations. Today, hold your breath, there are more than 50, 000 career options, in virtually every conceivable area of human activity, focussing, amongst others, on high- tech, healthcare and business efficiency. Popular professions opted for by students in the recent past like medicine, engineering, chartered accountancy or even law now appear to be plain vanilla.

All this and more was shared by Ms. Usha Albuquerque, one of Indias best known career counselor who visited our School on 20 October, 2012. Their research and perspective on a number of exotic and wow career options greatly excited both students and their parents. Audio engineering! Digital animation! Food stylist! Investment banking! Marine archaeology! Writing Apps for mobile phones! It was truly incredible to note the wide spectrum of opportunities that have now opened up , offering hope to every level of ability and personality.

Ms. Albuquerque's initial message to the audience was the need to to judge and dovetail ones aptitude, skills, interests and desires to be in sync before taking a career call, since the absence of any one could lead to a distressing outcome.

More diverse career options that one could possibly think of wee also mooted, giving wings to the imagination of all present. What do you like to do? Design? Cook? Garden? Teach? Play video games? Caring for humans, environment or animals? Nowadays a career option for every interest is available, she said. For each of the streams - Science, Commerce and Humanities she named numerous avenues that the students could adopt. And for each such path, they provided the academic essentials coupled with the soft skills and interests that were necessary to pursue it.

The extentent of detailed presentation left little to ask more, but for those who missed out on it, got that chance in the Q&A session at the end.

A widely held myth got busted that morning; it was established that there is no dearth of career options and theres one available for every individual no matter how unique he or she is. More importantly students are now better equipped to take informed decisions that will take them to their higher plane of fulfillment as well. Its all about introspecting to spot ones ability and interest, and once clear, there is a mathematical certainty that a career exists for it.
