Career Week, 2014: Leadership-an art of effective communication by Mr. Barun Jolly, hotelier.
"A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.
John Maxwell"
On the morning of 17th October, 2014, students of classes X, XI and XII enthusiastically assembled in the School Foundation Hall. As a part of Career Week, School had organised a workshop on leadership by Mr. Barun Jolly, Head of Operations at The Crowne Plaza Today, New Delhi Okhla. Mr. Jolly has been honoured as Best Professional of the Hospitality Industry 2012by Safari India National Tourism Awards and recently also 'General Manager of The Year for Upscale business hotels -2014'.
Mr. Jolly set the tone for the discussion by asking us who we look up to, as leaders, and what exactly is our perception of what leadership means. He effectively explained that leadership is the art of influencing people so that they strive willingly to accomplish goals. Further, he said, the qualities of a good leader are courage, will-power, knowledge and integrity. He pointed out that a leader must possess good communication skills and adapt effectively in a changing environment.

After this, a very interesting activity was lined up for all of us. We were asked to choose options that suit us the best in different aspects, namely, dress-sense, professional style, speed of activities, likes, team- work, wants, put-offs, and what we like to speak about. Based on this, we were categorised into groups- Controllers, Harmonizers, Socialisers and Analysts! The speaker was quickly able to point out character traits in each of us which took us by great surprise! We suddenly felt more aware of our inclinations and aptitudes and were guided on with possibilities of suitable career choices. We were further told that the ' negatives' that lie in each of us can be consciously ironed away so that the ' positives' are allowed to dominate and we are enable to become leaders in our own right.
The workshop opened our thinking and stretched our horizons. We felt enriched and look forward to more such interactive sessions.
