CBSE Capacity Building teacher workshop
A two-day workshop was conducted by the CBSE on 20 and 21 August, 2018 at Salwan Public School, Rajendra Nagar, for teachers of English ( class XII). More than 50 teachers from different schools of Delhi and the adjoining states attended the workshop. Ms. Navreet Shergill and Ms. Suhina Roshangar were the participants from our School.
The workshop aimed at providing a platform to teachers to maximize their performance and update their pedagogical skills. Ms. Alka Awasthi, Principal of Mayoor International School, Noida and Ms. Subhashini Ramakrishnan, Principal of Noida International Public School were the resource persons. The participants were given handouts at the registration desk.
The workshop began with a soulful rendition of a hymn sung by the choir of the host school. Then, Ms. Indu Kheterpal, Principal of the host school, addressed the gathering. She spoke of the importance of inculcating the habit of reading the newspapers amongst children. She also pointed out to the need for teachers to update themselves with the latest strategies in teaching the subject, whilst keeping the spirit of the human touch alive by meeting people and exchanging ideas and opinions. She quoted a line Teach to Inspire and Inspire to Teach to explain how important a teachers role is in shaping a childs outlook. She talked about a book written by a differently-abled studentat her school, Tara Sabharwal. The book titled Once upon a time was the outcome of continuous motivation and positive energy infused in the child by her teachers and friends.
Ms. Alka Awasthy then took to the podium and began with an ice-breaking activity. Each participant was given a strip of paper. The strip contained a part of a proverb. The recipient had to look for the participant who happened to have received the other half of the proverb. Having found the partner, the two were to explain the meaning of the proverb and then introduce each other, ( in place of themselves)! It was a wonderful opportunity to build new friendships and exchange information.
Participants were then asked to sit together in groups. Each group comprised four members.
Ms. Awasthy talked about the importance of reading and gave examples of different kinds of passages namely- Discursive, Factual and Literary. An activity was conducted where teachers were asked to frame questions based on the comprehension passage in the handout.
The discussion then moved to the comparison between the old and the new version of Blooms Taxonomy, a few chapters from the two prescribed books and the long and short writing skills as per the CBSE syllabus. Activities based on writing skills included drafting a poster and writing down the value points of a topic on article-writing were undertaken.
Towards the end of the session Ms. Sumedha Nagpal, teacher at the host school, showed us a PPT on the prescribed novel, The Invisible Man. The PPT imparted information about the plot, main characters, sub-main characters and important events in the novel. Discussions on the character sketch of the protagonist were held after the PPT.
The workshop was a model of engagement, respectful listening and sharing. We look forward to such experiences in the future.
Ms. Suhina Roshangar.
