CBSE Teacher workshop- Capacity Building Programme in Science

A two-day Capacity Building Programme in Science was conducted by CBSE at the Cambridge School, Sri Niwaspuri on 27-28 August 2019. Yamini Bhateja represented The Indian School at the event which attracted participants from about thirty schools from across Delhi-NCR. The resource person, Ms Maninder facilitated the session on both days. On day one of the workshop, the session commenced with an introduction of CBSEs theme of the year, Learning by doing.

Thereafter, various new methods of drawing the students attention using different strategies like, relating the numerals in the date with an atomic number etc. were touched upon. The usage of abbreviations/ short forms to make learning easier and interesting were deliberated. For instance, ALI stands for the three types of Meristematic tissues in plants (apical, lateral, and intercalary).

The workshop lay emphasis on the NCF 2005, the aims and objectives of science education and Blooms Taxonomy. Distinct methods of teaching science, something teachers could adapt in everyday routine to break the monotony of the class, a usage of concept maps and good delivery in the class were explored and debated to make the learning of science interesting and invigorating.

On Day Two, a practical session on creating and delivering effective lesson plans, saw an exchange of ideas by teachers. The think-tank created a list of strategies and activities like interactive lectures, demonstration method, deductive and inductive approaches to teaching, and the enquiry method for different disciplines of science.

The gathering also analysed and worked on how to create tactically and analytically sound question papers on the basis of weightage of the different topics/chapters.

The session proved to be useful and productive as the teacher-participants gained valuable insights into the best practices of teaching. They were able to gauge the vivid aspects of demonstrative teaching and learn innovative ways of engaging with pupils in a constructive manner.
