Class 11 attends a Sci tech lecture on the Oceans at IIT Delhi

On 18 January 2025, the prestigious Sci-Tech Spins Lecture Series organised its first session of the year at IIT Delhi. The lecture, titled “Earth's Oceans: The Physics Behind Their Might” was delivered by Dr Ritabrata Thakur of the Department of Applied Mechanics. With his exceptional expertise and engaging presentation, Dr Thakur captivated the audience, shedding light on the vital role that oceans play in shaping Earth's climate, ecosystems and future sustainability.

The session was attended by a group of enthusiastic class 11 students- Apeksha Saxena, Anay Verma, Adya Ojaswini, Kanishk Ahlawat, Daksh Panwar and Ridhima Joshi, accompanied by their Physics teacher, Ms Meenakshi.

Dr Thakur’s lecture opened with a profound exploration of how oceans regulate the planet’s weather systems, act as significant carbon sinks, and support an immense diversity of life. His discussion emphasised the interconnectedness of oceanic processes with global ecosystems and climate stability. A key highlight was his detailed explanation of ocean waves—their formation, propagation, and profound impact.

Using cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art technology, Dr Thakur described how scientists study oceanic phenomena. He showcased tools such as buoys, wave radars and underwater gliders, which are instrumental in measuring wave activity and understanding marine dynamics. Special attention was paid to satellite technology, with examples like TOPEX (launched in 1992) and the Jason Series, which have revolutionised global sea-level monitoring and wave analysis.

The lecture also included a fascinating case study on research advancements made in Chennai. Dr Thakur highlighted breakthroughs in wave mechanics and coastal dynamics, underlining their relevance for safeguarding coastal regions and enhancing our understanding of ocean behaviour.

What made the session truly unforgettable were the captivating visuals that brought the scientific concepts to life. Videos of ocean currents and wave activity, combined with stunning satellite imagery of sea-level changes, left the audience spellbound. The visuals demonstrated how ocean currents traverse the globe, influencing weather patterns and sustaining marine ecosystems. This seamless integration of visuals with expert explanations made the lecture both engaging and deeply informative.

The session was an eye-opener for all attendees, offering a fresh perspective on the physics of Earth’s oceans and their indispensable role in sustaining life on the planet. Dr Thakur’s passion and depth of knowledge inspired everyone to appreciate the ongoing efforts to study and protect these vital natural resources.

For the students, this enriching experience went beyond classroom learning, sparking curiosity and a deeper understanding of the wonders of science. The Sci-Tech Spins Lecture truly exemplified the spirit of innovation and education, leaving its audience inspired and informed.
