Excursion to Gandhi Smriti, class 1

A visit to Gandhi Smriti was organised for the students of class 1 on 26th September, 2014. A bright Friday morning greeted 167 students and five teachers who visited the museum. The children had been briefed about Gandhiji and the freedom movement in the classroom and were therefore specially curious. The entry of the museum itself impressed all of us with its manicured gardens. Gandhi Smriti is the place earlier called Birla house where Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse. The children were very impressed and excited to see a life- size charkha at the entrance. The corridors of the museum had a large pictorial display of the freedom struggle and our famous freedom fighters. There were pictures and graphics of Bapu, Rani Lakshmibai, Mangal Pandey, Subhash Bose, Maulana Azad etc. Several landmark events of our freedom struggle depicted tableaux were captivating. In particular the depiction of the massacre of Jallianwala Bagh was heart- rending. The helpful khadi-clad volunteers at the museum were a very resourceful source of information about the life and times of Gandhiji . We also enjoyed a short film on Gandhiji in the museum- theatre. It was a fun-filled educational excursion for the students and their teachers. Compiled by Ms. Neha Arora.
