Excursion to Qutub Minar; class 3.

The students of class III accompanied by their teachers went on an excursion to the Qutab Minar on 8th December 2016. We believe School excursions enhance learning and provide opportunities to participate in curriculum-related activities outside normal the classroom routine.

This time the purpose of the trip was to educate the children on a heritage site within Delhi. The children were given a brief history of the monument beforehand. They were told that the Qutab Minar is the tallest tower in India and the worlds tallest brick minaret.

It is interesting to note that this complex lies amidst the ruins of ancient Hindu temples which were destroyed and their stones used to build the famous minar. As we walked around the complex, we felt surrounded by history. We were told that construction began in 1193 AD under Indias first Muslim ruler, Qutb-ud-din Aibak.

The Qutub Minar is notable for being one of the earliest and most prominent examples of Indo- Islamic architecture. It is surrounded by several ancient and medieval ruins, collectively known as the Qutab Complex. The complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Delhi. During 2006 the monument attracted 3.9 million visitors, many more than the Taj Mahal, which drew about 2.5 million visitors. Now, we know why we should all visit this tall tower!

The excursion was well-received by the children as was evident from their large attendance. Besides, they were very reluctant to return!

The children were prompt to plead for another excursion to a monument!
