Experimental Physics workshop

On 27th October 2017, a workshop on experimental physics was held at Birla Vidya Niketan. It was conducted by Professor Sharmishtha Sahu, who is five time winner of the NCIEP (National Competition in Innovative Experimental Physics). She is currently Head of Department of Physics at Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women in Bangalore.

The following students of class XII, accompanied by Mr. Pallab Roy, took part in this interactive session- Saruby Sharma, Smita Jha, Sanatan Shrivastava, Manan Chhabra and Palak Bahree. Students of different schools were grouped together and were given different experiments, based on their syllabus. Some schools that participated in the workshop included Mothers International School, Gyan Bharti School, Sadhu Vasvani International School and the host school.

Some experiments performed by the students were: Use of polarisers and polar graph for the analysis of a linearly polarised light. Determining the resonance frequency of the LCR series and parallel circuits using R, C, and L Determining the Mutual Inductance of two coils connected in series, placed in close proximity To calculate the spring constant of the spring in static mode and dynamic mode and to show that they are nearly equal.

2 Japanese delegates from the Japanese Embassy in New Delhi enlightened students about the education and research facilities available in Japan. They emphasised upon the need for the complete utilisation of the talent and potential of India and also highlighted the improved relations between the two nations in recent years. It was interesting to know that Japan produces at least one Nobel laureate each year and is only second to the USA in terms of the number of Nobel laureates!

Our students got a chance to interact with their peers from other schools even as they got a hands on idea of several concepts.
