Girton College (Cambridge)- The Indian School Essay Writing Competition 2017 awards.

In the words of Dr. Nayana Goradia, Vice Chairperson of The Indian School, "it is to encourage the analytical and passionate thinking of the youth that we should have essay writing competitions." The award ceremony of the prestigious Girton College (University of Cambridge) The Indian School Essay Writing Competition 2017 was held on 11th December in the School auditorium. A bouquet of beautiful performances by the students was followed by the announcement of the long awaited result. The guest of honour at the event was Mr. Alan Gemmell, Director, British Council India. His active involvement with the UK Government to counter terrorism and his support to a new generation of scientists to work together across borders, has earned respect in the eyes of many. As a token of our appreciation, Mr. Gemmel was honoured with a potted plant and a hamper of soaps and candles handmade by the students of The Indian School Citizenship Programme. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"] A fusion of Rajasthani and Bengali folk songs set to Indian classical notes played by the school's Indian orchestra marked the event in the traditional spirit of 'atithi devo bhava', warmly welcoming our guests. This was followed by the western music band of the School presenting the song 'Teach your children'. If music is the heartbeat, dance is the soul. The Mohiniattam, Bharatnatyam and Odissi classical dance forms were fused into a delicate and imaginative ensemble by a group of students. A video message from Cambridge, sent by the Head of Girton College, Professor Susan J. Smith on the occasion, was played for the assembly. Prof. Smith explained how the shortlisted essays were evaluated and winners named. She said the grading committee was quite overwhelmed by the quality of the writing and she candidly commended the winners for their lucid expression. Her warm letter of appreciation to the School was read aloud to the audience by board member and Girton alumnus Ms. Brinda Shroff. Dr. Nayana Goradia spoke about her experiences as a student at Cambridge. She said she felt strongly about children being given a platform to articulate through creative writing, to offer them freedom from rote learning. Mr. Alan Gemmel addressed the gathering, sharing his plans of adding new perspectives to the long and strong relationship between India and the UK. He said he was delighted to be a part of this special ceremony. Finally it was time to honour the winners. Ms. Tania Joshi, Principal, The Indian School stepped forward and made the much anticipated announcements. There was a tie for the third position and three essays were selected for it. Nandini Rawat ( Father Agnel School, Delhi), Anish Agarwal ( Maharaja Sawai Mansingh Vidyalaya, Jaipur) and Guari Awasthi ( The Indian School, Delhi) were awarded a cash prize worth Rs 6,000 each with a citation. The second prize of a citation and cash prize of Rs 15,000 was awarded to Amyaa Bathla Sharma of Springdales School, Pusa Road. The winner of the competition, carrying home a citation and cash prize of Rs 20,000 was handed to Aayushi Roy (Cambridge School, Indirapuram). The prizes were sponsored by the Prafull Foundation. The Indian School has the tradition of honouring a student every year for overall excellence. Shubham Airia, Head Boy, batch 2016-17 was named 'Student of the Year'. He received a cash prize of Rs 1 lac sponsored by the Prafull Foundation and a citation. Ms. Joshi offered a vote of thanks to all those who worked to make the programme a grand success. The assembly then rose for the national anthem before proceeding for refreshments. Ms. Arunika Payal.
