Graffiti art workshop by a French artist for senior school.

On the bright and bracing morning of 11 December, 2012, our School took the novel initiative of organizing a workshop of Graffiti art. It is an art form with origins in Latin America used by the common city populace to express their emotional outpourings, both happy and sad as also to make important announcements. Graffiti art is also a medium of identifying and articulating one's identity ; personal, communal and even national. The popular art form carried over to Los Angeles and to New York and beyond. Graffiti artists specially enjoy working upon the irregular textures of city walls and animating them, often using caricatures of the human face.

A group of 15 students of classes 9-11 was privileged to participate in an interactive graffiti art session with Mr. Manu Gagneux from France who studied Graffiti art at a university in Le Mans in France. He was inspired by Bansky, a famous artist of the genre. Mr. Gagneux began with an introduction about the origin of graffiti and how we can create our own tags and templates. He then explained the use of spray colours for the purpose.

Over 3 days, together, the students and the artist created a dramatic mount upon a prominent School wall. No prizes for guessing what it said... Knowledge is Power our schools motto is now emblazened upon our beloved building! Filed by Garima ma'am, art department.
