Interaction with School Chairman, Mr Prafull Goradia for classes 4 and 5 on the Revolt of 1857

The students of classes IV and V chose the historic Revolt of 1857 to engage in an invigorating session with School Chairman, Mr Prafull Goradia, on 26 July 2019.

The erudite Chairman faced an enquiring audience eager to hear stories of Indias first war of independence. The talk revolved around how the British used the East India Company as a tool of imperialism and a crony of the inglorious Empire. From breathtaking scenes of Mangal Pandeys martyrdom to the poignant rendition of the immortal ghazal- Kitnaa hai badnaseeb Zafar, dafn ke liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili, koo-e-yaar mein- by the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, Mr Goradia painstakingly explained the continuing relevance of the famous revolt of 1857. He showed old pictures, documents and other remnants of history, thereby generating a profound sense of passion, pride and nationalistic fervour amongst the young future citizens. Mr Goradia further explained how the British colonisers sought to dismiss it as a mere uprising calling it the Sepoy Mutiny. The truth be known, it was an upsurge of nationalism and a sense of pride in the motherland that galvanised an entire generation of revolutionaries against the British. Peppered with fascinating stories, pictures and historical accounts of the Enfield rifle that was used by the Indian soldiers, to the bravery of the first freedom fighters like Mangal Pandey, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Tantya Tope etc., the talk was a deep dive into Indias valiant war against the colonisers. As always, the interface with Mr Goradia was a highly informative experience for students and teachers alike as it provided them deep insights into Indias glorious struggle for independence and Indians love for their motherland.
