Interaction with School chairman on the NRC for classes 9 and 10

The students of classes IX and X were once again privileged to attend a talk by chairman, Mr Prafull Goradia, on 24 October, 2019. The topic for discussion was the National Register of Citizens in respect to Assam. This is a matter of extreme relevance to the nation as there are 19 lakh people who have been excluded in the latest draft of the NRC released on August 31, 2019.

Mr Goradia always enlightens us with his diverse experiences. He took a historic approach to the issue and recalled significant events from the past. He started off with a brief description of the ethnicity of the state dating back to the era of the British Raj as well as the influx of migrants due to the excellent land features Assam possesses. He told us about major happenings like the protest in Mangaldai in 1979, the boycott of the elections of 1983 by the Assamese people, the passing of the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) Act, 1983 as well as the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985 which led to the creation of the NRC. The signing of the accords had major effects on Indian politics.

He also mentioned that in the current circumstances, several states of our country want an implementation of a NRC. He added that deportation of those who are unable to furnish evidence of their citizenship is a difficult and long process.

At the end of the discussion the students asked questions and gained knowledge from his valuable inputs. This talk prompted us to widen our horizons and think about the political situations brewing within our country.
