Interactive storytelling session with wildlife author Deepak Dalal

A team of ten avid readers of The Indian School participated in an enriching storytelling session with noted author Deepak Dalal at Birla Vidya Niketan on 27 August, 2019. The meeting was organised by the host school in collaboration with Puffin Books India and Koolskool.

For a wildlife lover who switched careers from being a chemical engineer to a full time author, Deepak Dalals stories for children are inspired by nature and its beings. From his first Vikramaditya series- Indian tales for Indian children in 1998 to his new Feather Tale series, he has penned several books.

The enthusiastic students of classes III to V - Adrika Chowdhury, Pranshi Walia, Ayaan Singhal, Raabhya Dawar, Arushi Panwar, Yashovardhan Labh, Mehar Kaur Nagi, Aanya Baveja, Nivriti Naswa and Sakshi Rao were accompanied by their English teacher Ms.Martina Roy.

The session accorded the young readers an opportunity to engage in a tte--tte with theauthor and learn interesting trivia about his life and journey as a writer. Mr. Dalals interactive presentation accompanied by wildlife videos and personal anecdotes was a deep dive into the lives of birds and animals across the world.If God gave me another chance, I would love to be a bird because birds have wings, said Deepak shedding light on the Feather Tale series. His engaging presentation on migratorybirds and their adventures kept the students glued to the screen. From the Greylag geese and Flamingos to the Peregrine Falcon and the Paradise Flycatcher, the students were mesmerised to know about the various species of birds and their unique characteristics.

The affable author read excerpts from the three books on display- Talon the Falcon, AFlamingo in My Garden and The Paradise Flycatcher. Intrigued and interested, students were quick to buy his books on display at the venue.

The presentation was followed by an engaging question and answer round where all students got a chance to interact with the amiable author. When asked about his story on a caged bird he responded that the cage is one of the worst creations of human beings. He shared

how, during his travels around the world, he noticed that all caged animals had a similar lookof despair in their eyes. His stories and personal accounts helped students learn about thevarious facets of wildlife.

The session gave impetus to their imagination and inspired them to pen stories of their own!

The youngsters creativeness grew new wings to fly!
