International Summit on Adolescent Life skills, Values, Gender and School Wellbeing
An international summit on Adolescent Life Skills, Values, Gender and School Well-being, organised by ' Expressions' India', went underway at the Summer Fields School on 9th, 10th and 11th December 2015. Over 70 schools from India and abroad participated in it. The summit aimed at presenting a window of opportunity for adolescent students, which could transform the social and economic fortunes of the country.
Komal Malhotra, Artika Bansal, Jaskirat S. Oberoi, Simran Khurana, Chinmaya Iyer and Aueshic Das from class XI of The Indian School actively participated in this summit. They were accompanied by School counsellors, Ms. Sukhmeen Cheema and Ms. Enakshi Rai.
The Summit started off with all participants being welcomed by ' Bharti', the mascot of the event, created by the Art Department at our School. Bharti symbolised what the event signified, and added meaning.
At the 'Global Health Exhibition', our School had set up a stall displaying the several activities that were being undertaken to inculcate life-skills in every child. Posters and charts depicting adolescent issues like bullying and peer pressure were also put up on the walls of the stall. Our Shramdaan programme was much appreciated by all. We incorporated a ' Positivity Enhancing Lucky Dip', which brought smiles on numerous faces. Our ' Life Skill Tree' made of paper mache with photographs of students and teachers pasted on its leaves also received appreciation.
Artika Bansal took part in 'Utopia: On the Spot Painting/Poster-Making' and presented a painting on the topic 'Life Skills and Attitudes'. The vibrant colours and thought-provoking ideas made it an alluring piece of art which took the Meritorious Award.
Simran Khurana took part in the 'Wellness Elocution' which was an extempore piece on the topic 'To win, one should have talent and desire, but desire is first.'
Komal Malhotra and Jaskirat S. Oberoi participated in the 'Adolescent Whiz Quiz' which covered the spectrum of common health and well-being issues that are spread across one's lifespan. Contemporary issues were highlighted.
Our entire team took part in the 'Thematic Jingle' and 'Theme Song' competitions. In the former, they presented a gripping skit which dealt with the importance of the girl child in our society, while in the latter, they presented a self-composed song called ' Zanjeero Mein Bandhe Dil' based on Gender and Values.
On the third day of the summit our Principal, Ms. Joshi spoke on Leadership. The talk was primarily for teachers and counsellors. A clipping from the movie Lagaan was played, followed by a discussion on the role of a teacher in a students life.
After 3 days of training, the closing ceremony was graced by Mr. Vineet Joshi, former chairman, CBSE and Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, psychologist and programme director at Expressions' India. A cultural show was organised for all participants, wherein glimpses of India's diversity were showcased in dance.
It was a matter of immense pride when our team went up on stage to receive ' The Special Jury Award' for the stall set-up at this International Summit.
