Internship at IIIT Delhi, class 11

The following students of class 11 went to Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology for a summer internship from June 1 to 3, 2015 : Alisamer Husain Shreya Sinha Divyanshu Panwar Divyansh Sharma and Harmanpreet Singh

Learning by doing is an important value being inculcated in the education system today. Taking a step in the same direction, our School organised internships for classes 11 and 12 students. My classmates and I, the Computer Science students, went to the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-D) for our internship.

On the first day we learnt about Arduino project boards and how we could control things like LEDs, motors and servers using this circuit board and some programming. We made a circuit which could make an LED blink and one which could switch an LED on and off. Another circuit could take inputs form a potentiometer and store it on the computer. We learnt that all of these can be combined to make everyday appliances.

On the second day we learnt about something that most kids only dream of controlling - a 'Quad-copter'. With four rotors, a camera and a computer on board, a quadcopter is capable of flying independently, tracking objects and giving a bird's eye view of any area. We learnt about it's basic principles of flight and how it is able to beam data over WiFi to a nearby computer, enabling it to perform complex functions like following a person or a predefined object. We also learnt about it's applications in security, filming and wildlife protection.

On the third day we learnt about Android App Development, using a software from MIT, called 'App Inventor'. Our teacher, Ms. Meenu Kumar joined in to learn about App development. We designed an app which could track our precise position using GPS. We also made an app which could make phone calls to any number. Later, we learnt about a software called 'Scratch'. Using this, we made small games and movies.

It was an extremely enriching and extraordinary experience which we enjoyed to the fullest.
