Day at the School eco park-class 6

The students of class VI were taken on an excursion to the School eco park on 7 December, 2018. 47 students were accompanied by their teachers, Ms. Yogeshwari, Ms. Martina Roy and Mr. Suraj.

The winter morning was crisp and clear and the group eagerly set off in an appointed bus. The mood matched the morning and the children were bubbly! Quickly the bus was on its way.

The urban clutter soon fell away as the landscape cleared to make way for the country. The fields steadily stretched on either side as our bus sped to our destination. Rural folk went about their morning fare. The children remarked on the carefree feel that these scenes conveyed! It seemed a remarkable observation of a young city child!

Soon we alighted at the School eco park. The air felt clean and the only sounds around us were those of the chirping birds and the rustling foliage! The teachers prompted the children to quietly listen to the notes of nature! And the children happily obliged.

After some stretching, the group was walked through the park. Multiple rows of vegetable beds beckoned the excited visitors who squealed to spot the gajar, mooli, gobhi etc peeking out of the luxuriant overlay of green. The mali explained the process of how the seeds are sown, when and how the young plants are tended and finally how the produce is checked and then picked. The children were delighted to be allowed to pick what they thought their mums would be happy to receive at home! In the Science Park section, the students were shown the life sized models erected there which demonstrate the fundamental principles of Physics. It was a hands on recap of concepts with which the students were familiar in the classroom. It was now time for some free play. Some played a round of volleyball and others petted the farm animals. Yet some others volunteered to participate in an impromptu poetry session, composing verse from the observations of the environs they were enjoying.

It was an extremely enriching excursion where the children made a connection, as it were, with the elements. The sights, smells and sumptuousness of Mother Nature was a revelation for these city bred students. We hope that they will grow up to value the experiences they carry back today- a learning to conserve and preserve our Mother Earth.
