Peer Education Summit

Drugs take you to hell, disguised as heaven is rightly said by Donald Lynn Frost.

The problem of drug addiction is not something new. Everybody is aware of the negative effects of this addiction, but there continues to be a substantial increase in the cases of drug abuse. Though the use of drugs is seen in the youth, this is a problem majorly found in today's adolescents. Adolescence is a period of rapid change both mentally as well as physical and during the process of this change, teenagers encounter several problems and fall prey to intoxication by drugs. Considering the seriousness of the issue, it has become imperative to create awareness regarding this problem among the young today. In order to address this, the topic of Drug Abuse was selected for the 4th Workshop of the Annual Peer Education Summit. Five students of The Indian School, Kanishka Basoya, Bhumika Narang, Tabish Hussein, Mubashshir Ali and Aayushi Sharma, were given the opportunity of attending this educational summit. Students from other schools of Delhi also participated in the workshop. The workshop started with an interactive session, where the students asked Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, noted psychologist the possible causes as well as solutions to the problem.

Apart from the this interaction,, the students of different schools were divided into groups such that no two students were of the same school. The main idea was to increase the interactive abilities of the students and make them capable of working in a group. Each group was allotted activities, like, role play, discussion, poster -making, abstract painting, etc. The students belonging to each group were able to work efficiently and came up with the multi-faceted aspects of drug addiction. Through role play, students threw the light on real-life situations faced by people suffering from addiction. Each activity attempted to depict how and why people start taking drugs and excuse themselves from the harsh realities of their lives. They sought to suggest ways to help people in need. A movie was shown before the groups began the presentation. The movie was about a boy expressing his concern about his friend who had committed suicide from drug-addiction.
