Pratah Stuti for Gandhi Jayanti, 1 October, 2015.

As customary each year, a morning of Gandhijis favourite bhajans for grandparents was organised at our School to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation on 1 October 2015. This day is also observed as International Day for Older Persons throughout the world. On this occasion, our students also took a solemn pledge to offer their love, gratitude and care to their grandparents.

The bracing autumn morning's breeze offered an ambience for the soulful ceremony. The large assembly of grandparents was extremely heartening for the young performers as they set about creating moments-to-cherish for their beloved elders.

The programme commenced with the screening of a short movie about our School, which showcases the manifold activities we engage in, balancing excellence in learning with an all-round cultural, physical, mental and moral development.

The indulgent audience smiled tenderly at the students of class 3 dressed up as the great freedom heroes, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lal Bahadur Shastri and others to remind us of the struggle, the sacrifice and their untiring toil to free our motherland.

The western music choir sang 'Abide with me, a timeless hymn and a favourite of Bapu. The students of class 4 and 5 evoked a wide range of mystical emotions as they sang a melodious blend of some of the most famous dohas of Kabir.

The entire atmosphere resonated with the mellifluous sound of the senior school choir as they sang Vaishno jana toh and other bhajans with piety and spiritual fervour. It seemed like the audience felt truly transported.

The Stuti concluded with our guests sampling a favourite breakfast from Gujarat- hot jalebi-gathia washed down with masala chai!

The Citizenship programme made a discreet presence at the event with student volunteers engaged in a swacchta drive, vigorously sweeping the School surroundings. A table displayed the innovative products of Shramdaan and grandparents spontaneously lent support to the endeavour by purchasing them.

" Happiness is when what you think, what you say and what you do are in harmony, said the Mahatma. It was indeed a harmonious culmination of the observance of ethics, of kindness and integrity, of courtesy and respect for elders, an intrinsic part of our Sanskara Syllabus.
