'People without the knowledge of their past, origin, culture and heritage are like a tree with no roots.'
On 18th April, 2017, as the nation observed 'World Heritage Day', the students of The Indian School were cordially invited to attend a programme initiated by the India Trust for Rural Heritage Development at the India International Centre. Accompanied by their teachers, Ms. Shuchismita Chatterjee and Ms. Charu Bhatnagar, the choir comprising students of classes IX to XII got a precious opportunity to sing the national anthem on the prestigious occasion, which was honoured by the presence of Chief Guest, Hon'ble Shri Hamid Ansari (Vice President of India) and Guest of Honour, Smt. Sheila Dikshit (Former Chief Minister, Delhi).
[gallery link="file"]Hon'ble Vice President, Shri Ansari narrated the significance of the culture and heritage of one's nation and how we, as a part of it, should embody its timeless values in all we do.
He described Article 51A of the Indian constitution which talks of the duty of every citizen to value the immensely rich heritage of our country.
Ms. Sheila Dikshit enlightened the audience about the threats to our precious heritage at present. She stressed on the importance of making education mandatory in the rural areas. After all these are the masses who constitute the upcoming generation. The culture and traditions which our societies assimilate are the ones that identify the nation. Considering that Indian culture is accommodating and heterogeneous and this makes for its plurality. This is the basis of its unity and seeking accommodation.
Article 49 was also included in the discussion which is the directive to protect monuments from being vandalised.
The dialogue seemed to reach out to the attentive audience.
