Solar observation workshop

On 20th December, 2017, a team of students of class VII represented our School at a workshop on solar observation at the Nehru Planetarium. They were accompanied by their Physics teacher Ms. P. Yogeshwari. There were several other school teams present at the workshop.

Post a video presentation on stars and constellations, there was an interactive session with the director of the planetarium, Ms. Ratnashree about the location of important stars and about the sun.

We were told about the zodiac signs. We heard about Sirius-A or the Dog Star as it is commonly called, which is the brightest star. We learnt to locate the Pole Star through two different constellations around it.

We also came across various time measuring techniques and devices and learnt about the people who discovered them.

We were taught to measure the angular diameter of the sun by setting our gaze at zero degree. For this task, the staff of the Planetarium instructed us and handed us an observatory box. Through this, we were able to view the image of the sun being projected on a sheet of paper, adjusting the observatory box. We drew a triangle using three points and found the radius by drawing a perpendicular bisector. With the radius we traced a circle and calculated the angular diameter of the sun which was 0.53 degree. We were among the teams to finish the task well in time!

It was a memorable learning experience.
