Teacher workshop at the American Centre

A one-hour workshop was conducted at the American Centre on 29 August, 2017 on the topic, Preventing Violent Extremism through Education". The workshop catered to a small group of secondary/senior secondary school teachers who participated in a discussion with an American NGO on this topic. Ms. Sukhmeen Kaur Cheema and Ms.Suhina Roshangar participated in this workshop.

American NGO, Greater Good has been commissioned to create an interactive digital education platform that educators can use to help students become global citizens and promote a culture of conflict-resolution and the promotion of peace.

As a part of this workshop, representatives of the NGO and of UNESCO shared digital materials on the topic which was then followed by a discussion to obtain our opinions about it.

The teachers present discussed the various ways of teaching students about peace and the role schools play to ingrain a spirit of tolerance and brotherhood among students. Some teachers suggested that celebrating festivals at school was a good way to teach students about the different religions and at the same time build mutual respect. Some opined that conducting special assemblies on various topics that affect teenagers today, go a long way in teaching students to handle feelings and emotions that cause disturbances among young minds. The effective use of rewards and appreciation were also discussed.
