Teacher workshop on the need for Critical Thinking for Student Development

A workshop on "Unleashing Potential: Equipping Educators to Cultivate Critical Thinking and Nurture Student Development" was conducted for the teachers of The Indian School on 23 August 2023, by Mr Parnab Mukherjee.

A spoken word performer, independent media analyst, curator, a performance consultant by profession, and an expert in the field of education, Mr Mukherjee is one of the leading alternative theatre directors of the Indian sub-continent.

Mr Mukherjee delved into the crucial topic of cultivating different levels of thinking skills among students. He delivered valuable insights that illuminated the path of cultivating critical thinking skills in students. He expounded on the concept of a thinking skills' progression, encompassing basic, intermediate, tertiary and high-order thinking skills. His presentation not only clarified the distinctions between these levels, but also emphasised their significance in nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Strategic Approach for Student Development

One of the key takeaways from Mr. Mukherjee's discourse was the importance of educators identifying and nurturing students' abilities at various thinking skill levels. He suggested that the teachers play a pivotal role in recognising and filtering out exceptionally talented students at each level, thus creating a Fast Track Group (FTG) that can be guided towards advanced learning. This approach ensures that every student's potential is harnessed effectively, and he or she is provided with tailored guidance for optimal growth.

Comprehensive Due Diligence for Student Evaluation

Mr Mukherjee advised the educators to adopt a holistic approach for student evaluation. He outlined the components of a comprehensive due diligence report, which includes evaluating students based on their academic performance, communication skills, involvement in extracurricular activities, subject inclinations, and overall attitude towards learning. This approach not only allows for a more nuanced understanding of each student, but also aids in providing personalised guidance to facilitate progress.

Shift from Recalling to Ideation

A major highlight of the workshop was Mr Mukherjee's emphasis on shifting the focus from rote memorisation to fostering ideation among students. He stressed that education should empower students to think critically, analyse information, and generate innovative ideas. By encouraging students to engage with the material on a deeper level, educators can equip them with skills that are relevant and essential in today's dynamic world.

The workshop led by Mr Pranab Mukherjee provided a platform for the educators to delve into the realms of thinking skills progression and student development. The insights shared by the speaker underscored the importance of identifying and nurturing students' potential, evaluating them comprehensively, and encouraging creative thinking. This event undoubtedly served as a catalyst for the educators to refine their teaching methods and contribute more effectively towards the holistic growth of their students.
