Visit to the National Museum- class 7

We, the students of class 7 went on an educational excursion to the National Museum on 30th August 2014. The weather was just right for an outing with our friends!

We were aware that we were going to view artefacts from the history we were reading in class and we were naturally very excited! On reaching the museum, a life-size temple-chariot ensconced in a glass casing near the main entrance welcomed us. Our anticipation was now bigger.

We proceeded to the auditorium where we were shown a documentary on the Harappan Civilization. We saw how the civilisation had taken shape and thrived. The movie gave us a detailed account of town-planning of the time, which included a well- designed drainage system and water conservation techniques like rain water-harvesting. We were fascinated to see how scientifically advanced the planners of the time were. We also saw how excavation at the site was undertaken.

We were then divided into two groups. Since the museum is very spread out, and it was not possible to see all the exhibits together, it was decided that we see selective displays. We first entered a gallery showcasing the history of the tribes in the north-eastern states of India. We saw the costumes they wore, their coins, manuscripts, art, weaponry etc. Next, we walked into the arms' gallery where we saw a life-size elephant dressed in Mughal armour. Among other exciting exhibits, there was the sword of Tipu Sultan and the bow and arrow of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadurshah Zafar. We were thoroughly involved as we walked past the art and culture, pottery, stamps, seals and many other valuable exhibits belonging to different periods in history.

We returned after a very educative and enjoyable excursion, refreshed and ready for our classrooms again.
