Workshop on Computational Sciences by IIITD

On 13th August 2018, a workshop was conducted for students of classes XI and XII by a team of researchers from the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIITD), on the topic -Computational Sciences and Robotics. The team consisted of Dr. Ganesh Bagler, interdisciplinary researcher working in the area of computational biology seeking applications of data science to health and medicine; Parikshit Maini, senior Ph.D. student in the Computer Science Department at IIIT-Delhi who specialises in autonomous vehicles planning and coordination strategies, and Dr. Swapna Purandare, biologist, whose primary research areas are evolutionary ecology and biodiversity conservation.

Dr. Bagler talked about data sciences and how computation can be applied to various spheres of life for analysing and using data sets, leading to several interdisciplinary fields such as computational biology, computational gastronomy, computational chemistry, computational chemistry, computational neurosciences and many more. Dr. Purandare, being a biologist enlightened the students about how the involvement of computation technology, machine learning and artificial intelligence has been a revolution in the fields of biology, botany and zoology. Finally, Parikshit Maini talked about autonomous vehicles, giving the students an overview of a few of his projects at IIITD, relating to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and self-driving cars. He explained their functioning, and how they can be used for tasks like surveillance, route planning etc.

The workshop was aimed at giving students an idea of the applications of computer science in almost every sphere of life and thus motivating them to choose from the numerous career options available today in the field of IT. The session was an interesting and interactive one, which built upon the interests of many students and inspired others.
