Workshop On Gravitational Waves and The Sound of Black Holes at Nehru Planetarium
On 22nd Aug. 2016, fifteen students of classes 8 and 9 accompanied by their Physics teacher, Ms. P. Yogeshwari were taken to Nehru Planetarium to attend a talk by Dr. Akshat Singhal, Phd. in Astrophysics, on the topic Gravitational Waves and the Sound of Black Holes.
Schools from across South Delhi had been invited. On arriving, we immediately set off to explore the various exhibits displayed in the planetarium. Next, we were shown a special documentary, which was a tribute to Nobel Laureate, S. Chandrasekhar. It gave us insight into the lives of Stars, one of S. Chandrasekhars major discoveries. The Chandrasekhar Limit was also discussed during the documentary.

This was followed by the talk Gravitational Waves and Sound of Black Holes. In place of starting with gravity or black holes we went on to discuss forests. This discussion aimed to help us understand how the slightest disturbance can fail our research if we try to study a forest through sound. This theory applies to the study of gravitational waves too.
We discussed why it took a hundred years after the first proposal by Albert Einstein to discover the above phenomenon. We were shown images of the apparatus used for the detection of gravitational waves and were told how sensitive this were.
The information provided at the workshop was enlightening and worth the visit.
Ms. P. Yogeshwari.
