Workshop on Hospitality by the International Institute of Hotel Management ( IIHM)
On 13 December, 2013, Atreya Bhattacharya, faculty at IIHM visited to introduce the students of classes X and XI about careers in the hospitality services. The IIHM is a leading hospitality management institute in the country, offering top class education in hotel and hospitality management with a global vision.
One thing that Ms. Atreya clarified in the beginning itself was that she was not her amongst us to promote the institute she is associated with, but to give us a larger- than-life picture of the field of hospitality services and the vast and profitable opportunities that come it's way.
Starting with a very simple example, she associated hotel management with the way we welcome and treat guests at our own place, in generosity, offering them the best and finally, giving them a reason to contact you again soon. She described what hotel management entails at it's best, with emphasis on hotels with 5 star capability. She dispelled the impression of hotel management not being an appropriate career option and we were amazed to hear that pay packages in the field run into crores! It is an immensely demanding field that accommodates professionals in many departments like that of front desk, room management, food and beverages, and also wine coopers, etc.
The speaker agreed that hotel management can also be a travelling and exploratory job if you work with a good chain of hotels. Her experiences revealed that she had travelled to many parts of the world and had interacted with people. She also discussed the achievements of her students. One of her students opted for bakery and got a chance to be in the team of baking specialists who prepared the cake for Prince Williams wedding! She even informed us that for 250 vineyards, there are only 45 wine coopers in this world who are paid up to 18 crores!
We sincerely thanked Ms. Bhattacharya for opening our minds to a novel and very creative field.
