Care for Air an environment workshop for classes 9 and 10
Care for Air is an organisation of like-minded people from different walks of life who believe in spreading awareness about the importance of clean air and how to achieve it.
The workshop was held on 13 April, 2016 and started with some important facts, like The average adult requires 12-13 litres of fresh air a day. According to a WHO 2014 survey of 1600 cities in 91 countries, New Delhi is ranked the most polluted city and in fact 13 of the 20 most polluted cities are in India.
Air pollution arises of two main factors: PARTICULATE POLLUTION (PM2.5) and GASEOUS POLLUTION (Ozone, NOx, Sox). These cause illness and millions of premature deaths every year.
-
PM2.5 is the most dangerous and is proven carcinogenic, damaging our hearts and lungs. It is invisible and about 1/3th the thickness of human hair. Short term effects are asthma and bronchitis and long term effects are premature mortality. Delhi has extremely high levels of PM2.5 all year long so we have no “safe” days.
The aim of the workshop was to entreat students to apply to become STUDENT AMBASSADORS and receive in-depth learning in a fun, short, activity based module which includes lab visits, working with air pollution monitors, and a better understanding and methodology of this complex topic. Alternatively, the aim was to spread awareness, foster community action, teach individuals about measures to protect one’s health when outdoors and indoors, equally. Reinforce and write to local leaders to improve fuel standards, enforce bans on crop/trash burning better truck regulations, improved public transport etc.
Those children who were inclined to be chosen student ambassadors for CARE FOR AIR were asked to hand in their names to take the programme forward.
