On January 17th, 2016, The Citizenship Programme and citizens of Delhi came together to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism by pledging their support to the lifeline of millions of Indians, the Yamuna. Ironically, the river has been reduced to a drain and is crying for immediate action from the state and civil society. This event was organised by Swechha and NDTV with the support of several active civil society organisations and other groups.

Our students and teachers assembled at School and reached the venue by 9 am. As soon as we completed registration, everyone was handed gloves and shovels/spades and garbage bags.

That day the Yamuna Shramdaan 2016 saw more than 500 citizens engaged in energetic voluntary effort or shramdaan for the cause of the river, followed by a plantation drive on the river bank. Our School team cleared 4 dumps of garbage, filled it into garbage bags and loaded onto MCD trucks. The children also lined up as a part of a long human chain to transfer the garbage bags from the river bank to the MCD trucks.

Yamuna Shramdaan 2016 witnessed a convergence of hundreds of people from diverse walks of life including students, artists, working professionals, entrepreneurs, policy makers, activists, home makers, media representatives, concerned citizens of the nation and volunteers from the UN. Our children felt fortunate to be a part of this campaign committed to the cause of volunteering to bring about change to the environment. .
