Class 2 excursion to the National Police Memorial

On August 28, 2024, a group of 154 students and 7 teachers visited the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri. The visit provided an insightful exploration into the history and evolution of policing in India, offering a comprehensive look at the various roles undertaken by the police force.

The National Police Memorial, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 21, 2018, serves as a tribute to the Indian Police Force and is observed annually on Police Commemoration Day. The museum’s journey begins with a gently sloping ramp that guides visitors to the basement. Here, the evolution of Indian policing is depicted through engaging graphics and well-researched text, spanning from ancient times through the medieval period, British rule, and into post-independence India.

The museum is divided into five distinct sections, each dedicated to a specific theme. Students encountered life-sized statues representing various police ranks, from constable to Director General of Police (DGP), which helped illustrate the hierarchical structure of the police force. An exhibit showcasing historical weapons used by Indian police forces provided further context.

Interactive touch screens offered detailed profiles and histories of police forces across different states and union territories. A notable segment of the visit focused on honouring police martyrs. The teachers facilitated discussions on police martyrs including a list of police heroes who have been decorated with India’s highest gallantry awards during peace time such as the Ashok Chakra, Shaurya Chakra and Kirti Chakra for their bravery during peacetime.

The museum also features a projection zone where students were shown a documentary on the lives and sacrifices of police officers, accompanied by a reflective voice-over. This part of the visit provided a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by police personnel in service to the nation.

The visit had a significant impact on the students, fostering a deeper understanding of the Indian Police Force’s historical and contemporary roles. The museum effectively raised awareness about the development of policing in India and highlighted the contributions of police officers to national security, unity, and various aspects of national life.

Overall, the visit to the museum was a valuable educational experience, offering students insights into the constitutional and legal foundations of policing in India, as well as the organisational structure of the Indian Police Force.
