Delhi: Heritage-City awareness campaign

Delhi: Heritage-City awareness campaign

UNESCO has 226 cities inscribed on its list of world heritage cities, but not a single Indian city. Delhi, given its historicity and international importance can be compared to Rome, Cairo and Damascus, all of which are heritage cities .With its depth and abundance of heritage, Delhi eminently qualifies to be designated with the status. INTACH has an MoU with the government of NCT Delhi to assist the former in the enlisting Delhi on UNESCOs list. As part of the process, an awareness campaign was launched at our School on 26 April by INTACH.

2 representatives from the organization came and oriented the students aware about the different facets of the heritage-status. They begin with making young citizens aware of the incredible richness of our cultural patrimony. Students were delighted to know that a number of events will be held at our School for the cause like painting, essay-writing, poster-making, photography, short filmmaking etc for classes 3-12 . The interaction also provided a podium for our students to enquire. Several asked interesting questions, Why only Delhi why not Agra which was the capital of India for the major part of medieval period ? was one eager enquiry. This was followed by a pledge ceremony by Head Girl, Amrita Dutta and Head Boy, Anmol Arora. This pledge together with the pledges of 34 other schools of Delhi would be handed over to CM, Sheila Dixit.

It is believed that this campaign will be the catalyst to spur decision-makers to catapult our city to the exclusive club. After all the heritage belongs to humanity as a whole and must be granted the conservation necessary. Loss through deterioration or disappearance constitutes impoverishment of heritage of all the peoples of the world.
