Literary Week, a summation, 27 April 2012

Each year a Literary Week at School enables every level to exercise and articulate the imagination. To read, write, recite. A generous forum is offered for an innovative and exciting exchange. Activities fill the week ranging from book reading, designing of book covers and creative writing to dramatised reading. This year, too, a busy week culminated in an impressive summation on 27 April which was blessed by Prof. Dr. Minoti Chatterjee, Principal, Kamala Nehru College as chief guest. The programme on 27 April, began with an introduction to the Literary Week, followed by a welcome for the chief guest and other dignitaries. A short film was then screened on the Jaipur Literature Festival, 2012, which had been attended by senior students. Infact the film, self-made was their effort to archive their exciting experience. The programme proceeded with a presentation on the life and works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and a dramatised reading of an excerpt from the novel Love in the Time of Cholera' by Marquez presented by students of classes 11 and 12. The programme also included a speech from Julius Caesar. A presentation on Charles Dickens and a recitation of poems of Dickens was offered as tribute on the bi-centenary of his birth was presented by the students of classes 9 and 10. Our Vice chairperson, Dr. Nayana Goradia introduced Dr. Minoti Chatterjee, who enlightened and inspired us by her address. She appreciated the role of the School in motivating students to celebrate literature by encouraging a literary week such as this. She called schools citadels of learning, and their roles undisputed in the development of children. She laid a special emphasis on making a habit of reading which enables children to glimpse and comprehend both, the beauty of language and diverse cultures. Appreciating the presentation on Marquez, Dr. Chatterjee drew parallels between the author and both, Dickens and Hemingway. She also highlighted the volatile nature of Latin American politics and social scenario and how that it influenced Marquez's works. She spontaneously applauded the efforts of the School and the students for occasioning the event.
