Skype classroom with peers in Vietnam school

Skype sessions aim to globalise the curriculum, introduce less familiar cultures to students to an interconnected world and promote digital literacy. It not only helps children facilitate intercultural communication but also increases their global competency.

We at The Indian School regularly reach out across land and sea borders to provide our wards with global experiences. On 21st September 2023, the Pre primary children of Merak, Leo, Gemini, Orion, and Vega engaged on Skype with Ms Honey Le and her primary students at The Beehive School, Vietnam. The purpose of the session was to foster cultural awareness and understanding by sharing information about our respective countries.

The virtual gathering exuded bonhomie with exchanges of warm greetings and introductions from both sides amidst cheerful smiles and waving. All the children seemed profoundly excited to virtually meet and greet each other.

The exchange focussed on the national symbols of the two countries: India and Vietnam. The stage was set with a brief role play that introduced the President and Prime Minister of India. Adarsh of PP Merak wore a white kurta –pyjama with a tri colour sash. Kiara Rohella of PP Gemini dressed up as President Smt Droupadi Murmu and Shivansh Gautam of PP Gemini dressed up as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. They spoke lines introducing themselves, with confidence.

Aavya of PP Vega described our national fruit, the mango; Arvi of PP Merak talked about our national animal, the tiger; Laisha of PP Orion elucidated upon our national flower, the lotus; Naksh of PP Vega described the tricolour, our national flag; Inaya of PP Leo spoke about the dolphin, our national aquatic animal; Sarbaaz of PP Leo discussed our national sport- hockey and last but not the least, Mivaan of PP Merak talked about ‘Chandrayaan 3’. The presentation ended on a patriotic note with the song “I salute my flag’.

After the informative and entertaining presentation by the nascent Indianites, the Vietnamese children showed pictures of their country’s national symbols with the help of a power point presentation. They described their national flag, national dress, called áo dài; their national flower ‘lotus’, and their national fruit ‘Thanh Long’.

The 35-40 minutes session was a delightful and enlightening exchange between the kindergarteners of both schools. This interaction helped our young students learn about Vietnam and the importance of embracing diversity and building global friendships.

In a nutshell, it was a wonderful learning experience.
