Summer Internship at Dharampal Satyapal Group of Industries, Noida, 2013.
Our feet in our shoes, laces tied tight, we dressed in formals in great excitement as we assembled for our internship programme. We were a group of 7 students assigned to this business unit and we started started ' work' on 4 June, 2013.
We assembled at School at 10 am and then left for Noida in our cars. Our destination point in Noida was B-8 Sector 3 i.e. the manufacturing unit for ayurvedic products of the DS group by the brand name, Pravek.
On the first day we were taken on a walk across the Pravek manufacturing unit where we given a comprehensive exposure to how ayurvedic products are actually manufactured. It included the mixing of various herbal ingredients in precise proportions to achieve the desired products, the processing of the mixed ingredients to make them edible, forming tablets and syrups etc. to make the products easily consumable and then finally their packaging in an attractive manner to attract consumers. Pravek manufactures herbal ayurvedic products such as chyawanprash, herbal dantmanjan, slimming tea and various tablets for arresting diabetes etc.

On the same day we also visited the CANPACK factory which contributes a major proportion of the turnover of the DS Group. Here, we were briefed about the manufacturing of cans in which their own edible products are packed. We were shown the material and the machinery they use, as also the process of manufacture of the cans. Each and every minute aspect is cleared as per their procedure, by the management head of the factory who was our guide across the tour of the unit.
Canpack manufactures cans for other companies too such as Malborough cigarettes, DS groups own brand Rajnigandha, Pass Pass, Chingles etc. It also manufactures cans for Indigo Airlines which use them to serve snacks on board their flights. Approximately, 1 lac cans are manufactured by the CANPACK industry per day.
The next day , we were taken to an apparel manufacturing company by the brand name POZE where several kind of apparel such as shirts, t-shirts, jeans, trousers etc., are manufactured. We saw that the work was divided and assigned to groups of workers. For example, one group was stitching only collars, the other group was stitching the back etc. Finally these parts so produced, were combined to create the desired apparel. The unit also had a washing area where all the produced apparels were washed, ironed and then packed for despatch.
After this we moved to another major unit of the group, that is, the Catch Masala manufacturing unit. Here we observed the process of making masalas which we we widely use in our day to day lives at home. The selection and processing of the raw material and then the packaging of the masalas in various forms such as cans, polymer- packs of different grades and quantities etc.
One of the days, we visited the corporate office of the DS Group where we saw the administration of such a large chain of businesses. Managing such a chain seemed a really tall order!
In the corporate office there various departments which looked after the different aspects of the administration of the company. The human resource department dealt with the recruitment of new candidates for several vacant positions. The marketing and procurement departments dealt with the sale of the products manufactured and the purchase of raw material from various sources. The finance department dealt with the banking aspect of the company. It also regulated the management of capital according to the requirement of the company. The corporate communication department dealt with maintaining the image of the group in the media.
We are very grateful for this exposure to a remarkable industry like this and shall cherish the firsthand experience and insight.
