Workshop on Traffic Rules and Road Safety
A workshop on traffic rules and road safety was conducted for the students of classes VIII and IX on 11 October 2018, by the Delhi Police, as a part of an on going Road Safety Campaign. The associated resource personnel from the Road Safety Cell - Traffic were invited: Mr. Sunil Kumar, Mr. Shiv Kumar, head constables and Mr. Santosh Kumar, Traffic Inspector, Greater Kailash Circle.
The students were briefed about the various traffic rules that ought to be followed in order to maintain safety on the roads. They were encouraged to follow the rules because the slightest mistake on the road can lead to a fatal accident. The students were told how they must follow rules while cycling. Common and careless mistakes committed by people were described in the session.
The first point stressed upon was the importance of wearing a helmet to keep the head safe as it is the most sensitive part of the body. A brain injury can lead to death, memory loss, paralysis, etc. Not only should one wear a helmet with an ISI mark but also ensure that it is worn in the correct way.

Parents must play a role to help children become law abiding citizens. Only the prescribed number of people should be accommodated in the car or van.
The second point discussed the golden rules to follow when walking on the road. While crossing a road, pedestrians must always look to the right, to the left, and again to the right and then cross the road. One must walk on the footpath only. On roads without a foot path, one should walk on the extreme right of the road. The children were cautioned not to be impatient and rush or run on the road, to cross only at zebra crossings, traffic signals, sub-ways and foot bridges, to respect the light signals for their own safety and smooth movement on the road.
Several videos were shown to the students to reinforce the information shared. They understood the consequences of over speeding, signal jumping, carelessness, not using the seat belt or wearing a helmet, the use of a mobile phone on the road and many other unlawful practices on the road.
The workshop was a huge success as it helped spread awareness and create traffic ambassadors who shall further spread the message of obeying traffic rules and ensuring road safety. Thus, awakening in the young students a spirit of citizenship!
