A Walk For Cancer Awareness, classes 6-8.

November is Cancer Awareness month in India and a Walk to highlight the issues surrounding a wide-spectrum disease like cancer was organised by the Indian Cancer Society at Tagore International School on 4 November, 2012.

The focus of this years Walk was Cervical Cancer a silent killer that claims thousands of lives every year. India contributes one-fifth of the Worlds total numbers of those affected by cervical cancer. That young people, now exposed to liberal sexual norms alongwith the gap of accurate information are what is making for a crying need for better health education for everyone.

The Walk was called Generations where students came with their parents, grandparents and teachers to participate. Other participants were those who had been touched by Cancer, as families, children suffering from cancer, doctors and members of the Indian Coast Guard, delegates from all the three defence forces, the NCC and most importantly all those who are deeply concerned for and want to help fight cancer.

 

A brief cultural programme was organised by the students of various schools/college as well as by the NCC groups and the Indian Coast Guard. Mrs. Gursharn Kaur, wife of Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, flagged off the event. The students walked for about 1.9 km spreading the message with posters and banners that we must all remain alert about catching cancers early and also that there is new hope for patients even after being afflicted with the disease.
