CBSE teacher workshop on teaching science

The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it. Neil deGrasse Tyson

The CBSE-Centre of Excellence, Delhi East, organised a Capacity Building Programme on Science (Secondary) on May 9th and 10th, 2023, at the COE office in Patparganj. The purpose of this two-day workshop was to gather valuable insights from teaching faculty members to develop effective content for teaching science in schools. Ms Ayesha Khan, a chemistry teacher, represented our School at the workshop.

The session commenced with an ice-breaking activity conducted by resource persons Ms Sumati Anand and Ms Vandana Banga, using a unique introduction method that fostered collaborative science learning.

The workshop primarily focused on Competency-based Education, aiming to inspire students to become lifelong learners equipped with knowledge, competence, and skills. Ms Banga emphasised the importance of developing lesson plans with clearly defined general and specific objectives, accompanied by a variety of methodologies, teaching aids, and learning styles to ensure successful and meaningful learning. She also emphasised the significance of the teaching-learning cycle.

Ms Banga highlighted the distinction between learning outcomes and learning objectives, emphasising the following points.

Lesson plans should be submitted before the lesson.

The lesson's objectives should be clearly stated.

Quality is more important than quantity.

Lesson plans should be implemented rather than remaining on paper.

Minimise direct instructions and focus on demonstrating before explaining.

Frame questions based on Bloom's Taxonomy.

Ms Banga, Master Trainer, discussed the key features of Bloom's Taxonomy in education, including its objectives and outcomes. The participants engaged in activity-based learning experiences, encouraging active participation and the sharing of views and experiences.

She emphasised the importance of lesson planning before, during, and after the class, and introduced various methods such as the Case-Based, Jigsaw, RAFT (Role, Audience, Format, Topic), Hooker, and Starter to make classes more engaging and interactive.

The workshop aimed to enhance participant skills in developing comprehensive lesson plans that include all essential elements.

In conclusion, the resource persons reiterated the significance of implementing learning outcomes in the day-to-day teaching-learning process.

Overall, the workshop proved to be highly interactive, informative, and captivating.
