Class 5 excursion to Waste to Wonder Park
The students of class V of The Indian School visited the Waste to Wonder Park at Sarai Kale Khan on 1 February 2020. The park was established by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) in 2019.
The group consisted of almost a hundred students and their class teachers. The visit aimed at familiarising the students with ways in which waste material is reused and recycled.
The unique park is based on the theme of Sustainability and Recycling. The children were excited to see replicas of the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio De Janeiro, the Colosseum in Rome and the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Five artists, seven supporting artists and 50 workmen from across the country, came together to create this park. The facsimile of the wonders of the world were created in around six months using close to 80 tonnes of waste material like scrap including discarded auto parts, bicycle rims, typewriters, discarded flanges and pipes, bicycle chains, etcetera.
The young visitors were amazed to learn that, apart from recycling waste material to create installations, the park has taken measures to cut down its carbon footprint, like using solar power to meet its electricity needs. In an effort to make the park self-sustainable, solar panels have been installed on the rooftops and there three solar trees in the park, which capture energy from sunlight and wind for producing energy. There is also a windmill that adds to the parks capability to generate electricity for itself.
The toilets have been fashioned of abandoned containers with solar power!
The students had a fun-filled day of learning, where they were accorded an opportunity to marvel at the amazing transformation from waste to wealth. The bus ride and the sumptuous snacks added to the enjoyment.
