Class 8 attends a lecture on Innovation

A science lecture was organised by the National Science Centre as a part of the Innovation Festival on 2 February 2024. 20 students of class VIII attended the lecture accompanied by their teacher, Ms Kanika Ralhan. The speaker was Prof Shobha Bagai, Director of Cluster Innovation Centre, Delhi University. The Director of NSC emphasised that children learn significantly from the innovative work of each other, fostering a collaborative and inspiring environment.

The lecture traced the roots of innovation back to early human inventions like fire and tools, showcasing their lasting impact on our development. Prof Bagai talked about the Green Revolution as a prime example of how innovation can lead to revolutionary change, emphasising its impact on agriculture and food security. She encouraged young people to embrace innovation and become job creators, not just job seekers. The central theme included:

Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Recognising the interconnectedness of the world while focusing on solving local problems

Incorporating Scientific Reasoning: Applying scientific principles to any chosen profession for informed decision-making

Prof Bagai delved deeper into the concepts of innovation and invention, providing clear distinctions through examples of telephones, computers, and the discovery of penicillin. They were presented as examples of inventions, singular breakthroughs that laid the groundwork for further development. Marie Curie's radioactive theory was used as an example of how inventions can be combined and adapted to create new applications and advancements, leading to innovations. The workshop highlighted how seemingly small inventions in various fields can come together to create larger innovations, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.
