Class IIC engages with peers in a South Korea school
On 8 November 2024, class IIC of The Indian School embarked on an exciting cultural exchange with Grade 3 students of Poongsung Elementary School in Seoul, South Korea, via Skype. This interactive session provided a dynamic platform for young learners to explore diverse cultures, fostering a sense of global unity and mutual respect.
The session began with warm and lively introductions. Students exchanged their names and favorite sports, sparking enthusiasm while also discussing the intriguing concept of time zones. This discussion offered a glimpse into how daily routines differ across the globe.
The Korean students enthusiastically shared insights into their rich heritage. They spoke about Korea’s majestic royal palaces and the intriguing history of their kings. They introduced the Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon), Korea’s national flower, symbolising resilience and beauty. Additionally, they highlighted their custom of bowing as a gesture of respect and shared details about Chuseok, a family-centred festival honouring ancestors. The Indian students were thrilled to learn the Korean greeting, “Annyeonghaseyo,” meaning “hello”.
In response, our students proudly showcased India’s vibrant culture. They spoke about iconic monuments like the Taj Mahal, India’s national symbols, including the lotus flower and the peacock, and explained the significance of the traditional greeting “Namaste”, representing respect and connection. They also elaborated on the joyous celebrations of festivals like Diwali and Holi, which bring communities together in harmony and celebration.
The exchange extended to famous landmarks and cuisines. The Korean students described Seoul’s renowned Gyeongbokgung Palace and Namsan Tower, along with popular cuisine like Bibimbap and Korean barbecue. The Indian students introduced Delhi’s famous landmarks, including the Qutub Minar and India Gate, as well as delectable street foods like chole bhature and stuffed parathas. Exchanging simple greetings in each other’s languages further deepened the connection between the groups.
This enriching interaction left both groups with an appreciation for each other’s traditions and cultures. The session proved to be an unforgettable learning experience, emphasising the beauty of diversity and the value of fostering global understanding among young minds.
Such cross-cultural collaboration inspired unity and demonstrates how the world’s richness lies in its diversity, a lesson that will resonate with the students for years to come.
