Class IV interacts with author of detective books

As a part of Library Week 2023, a captivating session was organised for the students of class IV, in the School library, on 30 October 2023 . The guest speaker on the occasion was Ms Ruchika Chanana, freelance writer and editor, known for her expertise in creative text and idea-based content across various industries and the media. Ms Chanana is the author of “Neha and the Nose,” an exciting adventure and mystery story for children.

The event commenced with a warm welcome by Divjot Kaur, a student of class IV A, who welcomed Ms Chanana and presented her a gift hamper comprising handmade candles, made as Shramdaan under the aegis of the School Citizenship Programme and a potted plant from the School nursery.

Ms Chanana initiated the session by introducing the different genres of books available for children, and then proceeded to immerse her audience in a world of magic realism and detective books. She made the session engaging by having the students imagine themselves as detectives trying to navigate through a room filled with laser lights, sticky substances, and mysterious challenges! The young sleuths thoroughly enjoyed the activities, which included tiptoeing, crawling, and silently walking past each other, to get a taste of the intriguing world of detectives.

After the engaging detective- themed activities, Ms Chanana encouraged the students to come together for a discussion. She emphasised the importance of observation skills in the life of a detective, and highlighted how keenly observing one’s surroundings, helps solve mysteries and puzzles. This discussion allowed the young participants to reflect on the valuable life skill of observation, which extends beyond the pages of detective books.

Following the enlightening discussion, Ms Chanana continued to engage the students by dividing them into groups of five. In each group, she handed out a short written mystery, challenging the students to read and solve it. The mystery narratives were carefully crafted, presenting a set of clues and riddles that required the young detectives to use their sharp wits to decipher.

After a thoughtful analysis of the provided mystery, each group enthusiastically presented its solutions and offered a reasoning regarding the identity of the thief in the story. This activity not only honed their critical thinking and deductive skills, but also encouraged them to collaborate and communicate effectively with their peers.

The session exposed the students to the thrilling world of detective stories, and instilled in them a life lesson, that is, the significance of paying attention to detail. The event proved to be an educational and entertaining experience, leaving the attendees with newfound knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for the world of books. It broadened the children’s horizons in the world of literature, along with fostering teamwork, analytical thinking, and creativity.
